St. Paul's Church - Irton. In 1865 the Church that stood in the small hamlet of Irton was demolished, and work was started on its replacement. Further renovations were then carried out in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The Church tower contains a peal of eight bells given by Sir Thomas Brocklebank, the shipping magnate, who set up the Brocklebank Shipping Co in Whitehaven. There are many stained glass windows in the church, and two pairs of these are designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and made by William Morris & Co. These show St. Paul, The Tiburtine Sibyl, St. Agnes with a lamb, and St. Catherine of Alexandria. In the churchyard is one of the most important crosses in Cumbria. The 9th Century Irton Cross. Erected in the early 9th Century, before the Danish & Norse invasions, the red sandstone cross stands some 10 feet high. Following the retirement of the organist and sadly with no replacement being found the Church's PA system was pressed into service to broadcast recordings of an organ from a "hymn machine". However, the PA was suffering from an excessive amount of hum. PAVA services were contacted and the client outlined the specification and tight budget. It was stated that the system would be primarily used for playing music from a hymn machine but the ability to play music from a laptop or a similar device would be appreciated. For the times when a large congregation was present the PA system would be used for sound reinforcement from the Vicar's radio mic. In addition the church also plays host to small acoustic concerts from time to time and the PA should be capable of providing discrete sound reinforcement for these events too. We carried out a trial with two Penton JD20T background music loudspeakers to confirm that the reproduced level and quality would be acceptable and found that fortunately the Churches good acoustic and relatively low reverb time meant that expensive line source or column loudspeakers could be dispensed with and the JD20T loudspeakers would perform perfectly well. In total of six JD20Ts, in black, have been used to cover the Nave, three down each side. These are positioned high up in the corner of each hammer beam and wall, and are very unobtrusive against the dark wood of the ornately carved roof timbers. The speakers are aimed downwards into the pews to provide a very even sound across the seating area. A further two JD20Ts have been installed at the Alter to act as near field monitors to counter the delay in sound arriving from the Nave. Amplification is by Bosch PLE-1MA120 amplifier which is ideally suited to this type of application, providing four mixed microphone inputs and three switchable music source inputs.
